Today was the last day at the main shop...this is a good thing. After 5 years in a strip mall characterized by volumes of NASCAR fans and ridiculous rents, we've moved on. Things have been really good at the 4-Corner store the last few years and I'm excited about the prospects that lie ahead.
I got into this business 5 years ago with grand expectations of making money and doing what I love. Well, I do what I love to do so I guess it's worked out ok so far. The most exciting aspect of the new move really lies in the opportunities that are now available.
It's nice to be able to focus on fishing, fly-tying, and servicing fisher-folks again rather than entertaining husbands as their wife shops down the way. We've made some good changes with some subsatntial addtions in the fly-tying selection. We seriously have to have the best selection around now. We have everything a tyer could possibly want and are getting back to the basics with a sick selection of flies and fishing gear!
I can't wait to go to work tomorrow...now that's something I haven't said in a while.

Lightning Bugs
Ever find a bug that just really works all the time? My favor of the Lightning Bug came reluctantly over the years, but I am convinced. The things just works, on slow days, good days, the bug always finds fish. I'm not a great tyer, not bad either, but mostly I'm slow. I go through over 50 dozen of these a year so I've got quite the task ahead of me in addtioion to all the others I need to tie. Silver, pearl, green, and gold...they all do it!

Salvation
Things have been looking up as of late. The wife came back from Antarctica on Xmas eve and I actually went fishing on the day after. That nasty cold weather brok just before Chrsitmas, making conditions ideal for some winter fishing.
The Madison has been really good the last couple of weeks with winter nymphing being great. I've been getting good numbers on black Zebra Midges trailing a golden stone nymph I tie. Midge are the most active critters this time of year and a variety of nymphs imitating larvae and pupa usually do the trick. The last few years, I've been fishing Hurricane Midges and Disco Midges as the mainstay patterns. Red and Green seem to be the most consitent producers...but I have a growing fondness for the black too.
Bought the wife one of the new Zero Gravity 6 weights by Orvis for XMAS. Yeah, she will use it more than me. We took it out on New Years, but the outing was more for walking around the river than catching fish. At least that's what I told her.
