Good Stuff

FWP has opened just about everything back up now. The only closure that affects us is the Lower Madison below Warm Springs. It's open in the Beartrap all day now, but still closes at 2 between Warm Springs and 3 Forks. The entire Yellowstone and Gallatin are open again along with the East. Just open the LOWER...it was 63 near Greycliff at 1 pm today and has been like this for 2 weeks now! AND it is fishing GREAT!
Ok, I fished with the new high end Orvis rod for 2008 today. It's called Helios for some reason. If you know me, you know that I call it like it is. These rods are stellar! Lightweight (905 was 2 3/4 ozs) and throw a line with powerful ease. The rod really impressed me as it is vastly different than the Zero G, which has been a disappointment to me, in that it loads quickly and easily, mended line very well, is sensitive and very light. This is good shit and I'm excited about the new rods for teh first time since the T3's came out! The rod is very handsome without the Bling Bling that teh Zero G touts. They will retail at $755 but they are heads and tail above the Sage and Winstons of teh world...honestly. It also caught some fish today.

Fish On

The weather has just been amazing! I know I've been saying this for awhile now, but after the brutal heat of July...August has been terrific! The smoke from all the fires has been gone for over a week now. The Yellowstone is all open again, now we're just waiting for teh Lower Madison and teh Lower Gallatin to come off the restrictions whihc should be anyday now if FWP ever pays attention to the water temps there. The lower has been between 62-68 for 2 weeks now.

The Upper Madison has simply been awesome this summer. I've caught more fish over 20 inches this year up there than ever before. But the numbers of 12-16 inch fish are also great, making for plenty of action throughout the day. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming month as some of those huge fish from Ennis Lake start to make their way up the river.

Fishing has been great, so get out there!

Another Day in Paradise

The weather has been just awesome latley, highs in teh 70-s and 80's lows in the 40's. Needless to say, the fish are eating well and we're getting back onto most of our area waters. Here's a 24 inch Brown from the lower Maddy today. The biggest of the year for me so far and the biggest my client ever got. A true brute.

The Upper Madison continues to fish really solid thanks to some great flow management by PPL this summer. Flows are down, but the temps are great so the bite is on.

Some Fish

Fishing continues to be pretty solid around SW Montana. The weather has cooled enough to get the fish eating pretty good on teh Lower Madison. This is the one fishery in the area that really does warm up too much. The solution is to not fish it when the water's over 70 as the fish don't eat when it's that warm!
When the fish don't bite..it's always good to have Lance with you as he can always get something to hit! The second pic is not a fish on Lance's Line, but the battle was epic.

4 days of hard fishing with a couple of DB's earlier in the month resulted in some good times and some nice fish. Rodeno worked hard and ended up with this nice Upper Madison brownie.

Some More Ranting

FWP is still on my not so favorite list.

The Hoot Owl restrictions are still in place on some of the lower drainages, but they did lift it on the Paradise Valley stretch of the Yellowstone. Those restrctions do not save fish so don't fool yourslef into thinking that there is any logic involved!

If they were truly worried about saving our wild trout, increasing catch & release waters would do far more to save wild trout than these silly "feel good" restrictions.

NO LOGIC. So let's say that the fish are more prone to dying after 2 pm than say noon (whatever!) from trhe stress of being caught and released. On most Montana waters, anglers are allowed to keep 3-5 trout every day. Most anglers practice catch and release, but there are certainly a good chunk that like to keep a few trout every now and then. According to the regs, we shoudl be allowed to kill a few fish everyday anyway, so what's the big deal if we just keep our limit after the 2 pm magic hour? The point is that FWP has no idea HOw to manage our wild trout fisheries! Close it or leave it open!

Another FWP gripe. Commercial operators (guides, contractors, movie folks, etc.) are now required to pay FWP a $100 fee in order to use state-owned fishing access sites. I'm all for paying for the use, infact I would've been up for paying more. The problem is that we have gotten NOTHING out of the new revenue source. I've been all over Region 3 this year and the only thing I've noticed is a dumpster at Black's Ford! That extra money can't even keep toilet paper in the outhouses! The $100 fee is being wasted away and I'm disgusted by it! There's a reason that beurocrats are not in the real world...they don't understand how it works!

Some pics from the las couple of weeks

Proof that fishing is still good

A Little Rant

Fishing has been very good the last 2-3 weeks, depsite the rumors and predictions of doom and gloom. Things really are looking good as we head down the home stretch of summer conditions.

The esteemed FWP has once again demonstrated their ineptness in imposing the "hoot owl" restrictions on pretty much every waterway that's worth a crap...except the Upper Madison and the Gallatin. Water Temps have been fine everywhere that you'd expect them to be. So the Lower Madison is warm...which is ALWAYS the case, and so are all of the lower end of the major drainges. It's how it is every year. We don't fish that stuff this time of year anyway. The Yellowstone from say Springdale up is fine.

The point is this....the hoot owl, closures, restrictions...whatever...do not save fish! They jsutify FWP's legal oversight of the management of our rivers. What do they actively do to manage our rivers and streams? NADA! They electroshock twice a year and turn ou their reports about a year behind schedule, The reports have to do with the numbers, size, and species of trout that inhabit certain sections of rivers. They simply monitor populations and may make changes to the regs based on the rudimentary resullts of the elctro shocking.

They can not show direct corrleations between population changes and water temperatures on any of the typical fisheries of SW Montana. The Firehole is not typical and it's not in Montana!

So, why all the hub bub? My tax dollars, in the form of licneses, (which are voluntary) are wasted away. FWP does good in that they buy land for wildlife and public access to recreational streams. They don't manage our wild trout fisheries though, so don't let the "Hoot Owl" restrictions make you think that they've got some sense! What's the difference between closing them at noon and 2, or 2 and 4? It's just propogandized BS. Furthermore...why not close Ennis Lake to fishing? Faulted Logic.

Anyway, fishing has been good, despite what FWP wants you to think! Trout are still eating Sculpins, Hoppers, and a gizillion different imitations of stoneflies, mayflies, caddis, and midges depsite what FWP might think. Concientous anglers that want to practice catch and release frequent places where the bite is on (fish really do slow down when the water gets over 73 or so)and take time to revive the fish. Ok I'm done with that little rant.

I really like FWP as an entity, but I've just seen too many episodes of bullshit behavior over the years. They made a big deal about us selling licenses, we had to hire an attorney and spend thousands of dollars to sell something that we make no money on! Then their accounting relies on faulted systems...they refunded me in excess of 4 g last year because of that! They tough talk on illegal guiding and outfitting, but let every felon with a hard luck story back on! A law is a law is a law. I'm tired of CONVICTED drug dealers being given the oppotunity to have a guide license. It's part of the deal and every guide or outiftter that has had a license knows that they will lose their license if they get caught committing a felony! So, why do they get their license anyway!!!!!!Then there is the issue of a couple guides and and teh son of the owner of one of the shops in Ennis last year that accidentally shot a couple of my guides with birdshot last fall. Oh yeah, did I mention that they shot the guys with BIRDSHOT while shooting at a HERD of deer CROSSING the river between between PRIVATE LAND, from a RAFT while NOT wearing ornage & they had another deer already in the raft? It took the FWP dudes about a month to follow up on the whole thing. The guys got a ticket for not wearing Orange. They still guide and have fishing licenses! So, think about some of thesethings next time you think that FWP really knows what it's doing with setting the various closures that spring to mind! Remember..our river and stream fisheries are wild trout populations (no hatchery), so ask yourself what expactly does FWP do to manage them?
