Had a happy 4th, watching fireworks from the M. Honestly, it had been 20 years since I was last on that trail and I was amazed at how different the valley looks today than it did back then. The more things change, the more I wish it was back when it was instead of is. However, I wouldn't trade my world now for what it was back then, so maybe I have a new perspective on the way things change.
Today is my wife's birthday so we opted for a day on the water with kid, dogs, and us. Decided to come over to the big horn as the reports have been good and the crowds have been quiet. We did not decide to do this until about 10 this morning and we had decided to camp. Well, we opted for a cabin rental about halfway over which makes that extra hour of packing seem pretty pointless at this stage! What normally is a 4 hour adventure, somehow ended up being more like 6 which out us. Here around 4 and on the water by 5. Tired kid, shaky dogs, and incoming storm made for more frustration than fish. Tomorrow should be good though, I can feel it in my elbow.
All that said, here I am, on a fishing trip to the Big Horn river with  my wife, kid, and dogs. It's no big deal for us to hop in the car and go whenever we want. I think about all the folks that plan and plan for their few days a year to be able to do what I can do on a whim. I am lucky to have been ale to make a living doing what I love to do in a place as awesome as this. More so, I am lucky to have found my soulmate and to even get to do what I love to do with her, in this place we call home. God has been good to me because people like me just don't end up where I am without a whole lot of divine intervention! The trick for me is to remember that it is a gift, not an entitlement.
Anyway, the water here is in good shape, weeds not too bad, not too many bugs out this evening so I am thinking worms and sowbugs will be the thing. Not crowded on the big horn means only 50 other boats.
